Form 990 Series
Organizations exempt from federal income taxes include nonprofit groups such as charities, education groups, religious groups, and more, and these groups are in fact exempt from income taxes. However, that doesn’t give them the green light to go ahead and avoid filing any taxes at all, because, by law, they are required to file IRS Form 990, the Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax.
Form 990 is used by the IRS to provide the public with financial information about nonprofit organizations. It’s also used by government agencies to ensure that organizations aren’t abusing their tax-exempt status. Needless to say, it’s pretty important that your nonprofit organization files.
Knowing that you have to file is only part of the battle because it’s important to know which 990 Form you need to file for your organization. The 990 Forms include:
Form 990 is filed by organizations with gross receipts more than or equal to $200k or total assets equal to or greater than $500k.
Form 990-EZ is the Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax and is filed by organizations with gross receipts less than $200k and total assets less than $500k.
Form 990-N which is the e-postcard of the Electronic Notice for Tax-Exempt Organizations that are not required to file Form 990 Form 990-EZ. This form is for organizations with gross receipts that are normally $50,000 or less. You are required to file this form electronically, there is no paper form.
Form 990-PF or the Return of Private Foundation is filed by private foundations in the US. It includes a fiscal list of information and a complete list of grants.
If your organization is on a calendar tax year then your Form 990 is due on May 15th. If you operate on a fiscal tax year then your Form 990 is due on the 15th day of the 5th after your tax year. For example, if your fiscal tax year ends in May then your Form 990 is due on October 15th.
