Is Your Form 990 Due Today?

Hey nonprofits and tax-exempt groups, we hope you’re prepared to file your Form 990 because today is a major deadline day. It’s important to file in order to avoid major penalties and to maintain your tax-exempt status.

Now you may not need to file your Form 990 by today, November 15, because the deadline varies based on when your tax year ends. That’s why we’re going to go over exactly when you need to file. Also, if you do need to file by midnight tonight, don’t worry, TaxBandits will help you complete your Form 990 and transmit it directly to the IRS.

Is Your Form 990 Due On November 15th?

The Form 990 deadline is the 15th day of the 5th month after your tax year ends. That means for organizations with a calendar tax year that ends in December the 990 deadline is on May 15th.

However, if you have a fiscal tax year, meaning your tax year consists of 12 consecutive months and ends any month besides December your deadline is in a different month. For example, if your tax year ended in February then your 990 deadline is on July 15th, which is 5 months and 15 days after the tax year ended. Also, if your tax year ended in June then your deadline is on November 15th.

Remember, if your Form 990 was due in may and you used Form 8868 for an automatic 6-month extension on your Form 990, then your time is up! 6 months has officially passed and you need to file by November 15 at midnight!
