With the year-end 1099 and W-2 filing season in full swing, it’s easy to lose sight of other critical forms that share the same deadline (January 31, 2025). If you’re an insurance provider or employer operating in states like California or Massachusetts, filing ACA 1095 forms and Form MA 1099-HC with the respective state authorities is equally important. Missing these deadlines could lead to significant consequences for your organization.

This blog will break down the filing requirements and explain how TaxBandits can simplify your filing process for the 2024 tax year.

Why do Some States Have ACA Reporting Requirements?

The Affordable Care Act initially included a federal individual mandate requiring all taxpayers and their dependents to maintain health insurance coverage. However, this federal mandate was effectively eliminated starting in 2019 due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. In response, several states, including Massachusetts and California, implemented state-level individual mandates to ensure residents have health insurance coverage. While some states follow the federal deadlines for ACA reporting, others follow separate deadlines.
