#TaxTipThursday: Last Minute Tips to E-file Forms 1099 & W-2

Ahh, March. In like a lion, out like a lamb. Unless, of course, you’re a business owner filing 1099s or W-2s. Then it goes more like, “March: in like a lion, out like an extremely stressed out lion with the IRS monkey on its back.”

But rest easy, 1099 and/or W-2 e-filer, you’ve come to the right place. Not only will ExpressIRSForms help you quickly and easily e-file your IRS information returns, but we’ve also brought you some last minute filing tips to make the process even easier!

You Have Exactly One Week From 11:59 PM Today to File
You’re probably already aware that when you physically mail in your 1099 and W-2 forms you have until the last day of February to have your forms postmarked to the IRS. Similarly, when you e-file, you have until 11:59 p.m. (your timezone) to transmit your forms. Even if the IRS doesn’t process your form(s) until a few days (or weeks, depending on filing volumes) later, they’ll be considered on time because they were timestamped when you transmitted them.

You Could Have Longer to File
If it’s looking like you’re not going to be ready in a week to file, go ahead and e-file extension Form 8809 through ExpressIRSForms! It’s only $2.99, and you’ll automatically receive an extra 30 days to file. It’s a simple process, usually taking about five minutes to complete, and just think of all you could do with 30 more days to file!

You Really, Really Need to Send Out Your Recipient Copies If You Haven’t Already
You could also have us do that for you; select the postal mailing option, and we guarantee your mailings go out by the next business day after you file. Now, the recipient copies were due out on February 1. However, this is one of those things where the IRS won’t know (and fine you), so long as no one squeals. So if you’re fairly good at being the Godfath-, I mean boss, you still technically have time to get these out to your people. But can I just say, on behalf of your recipients, please make sure they get out before April so they can meet their April 18 filing deadline?

Even if You Miss the Deadline, Go Ahead and File
You didn’t hear it from us, but, uh, if you’re within a few hours of that 11:59 deadline, there’s a chance your forms will still be processed and accepted as normal. And if they are considered late, your fine(s), if any, will be determined by how long it took you to file everything correctly. So the sooner you file, the better.

The Quickest and Easiest Way to E-file is with ExpressIRSForms
